In Nepal, the tri-city of Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur is virtually an open-air museum of art and architecture. A stroll through any of the main thorough fares or neatly paved alleys in any one of them the precinets of the ancient palaces complex in in particular, could amount to a travel thorough time. Widely know wa the pagoda style, Neapl’s unique architecture commands respect and draws enthusiastic comments from everybody for its daring simplicity of conception, its vibrant wealth of design, and exquisite work manship and taste. Like the Nepalese national flag it is superbly landscaped to the undulating swings of the surrounding hills. It is nowhere out of places in Nepal as witness by the Muktinath temple on the glacial fringe of Dhawalagiri, the Varahi temple in the midest of the Phewa lake in Pokhara, the Pasupatinath temple by the sacred banks of the Bagmati river, the Harati temple on the top pf the Swayambhu hillock on the Nayatapola temple in the market hub in Bhaktapur.
Hanuman Dhoka and Basantapur in kathmandu, 55- window palace in Bhakatapur and Choukot palace in Patan; monastic establishment like Kwabahal in Patan, Math Chhen in Bhaktapur and Bhagwan Bahal in kathmansu. Another architectural triumph of Nepal as represented by the stupas. They are essentially Buddhist genre as such they are fairly countries of South Asia and Far East. But they appears to have attained a new height of perfection and dignity in Nepal as witnessed in particular by the Swayambhunath and Boudhanath stupas in kathmandu.
The chief architectural features of this kind of religious monuments are the white hemispheric mound erected on a square or round plinth, the cultural brass construction painted with the all-seeing eyes on each panel, the brass finial of 13 concentric rings tapering upwards and then opening out in the form of a double canopied umbrella, the tradional sign of Royalty of protection with niches to accommodate the brass images of the seated Buddha in various traditional postures like the posture of meditation in; Nepali Dhyana mudra, the posture if non-fear; in Nepali Abhaya Mudra, the posture of calling the earth to witness; in Nepali Bhoomi Sparsha Mudra and so on. The magnificent stupas of the Swayambhunath and Boudhnath features these extra decorations as well under the influence of the Lamastic school. The temple precincts of the Boudhnath support a nice colony of the cheerful people of the Tibetan origin, who follow the traditional of their forefather in religious rituals, social customs, dress habit and ways of speech. In comprasion, the Swayambhunath platform is more of a mixed breed with Tibetan monasteries and Hindu shrines clustered close to one another in a magnificent affirmation of the spirit of religious tolerance, which is such a dominant, all-pervasive element in the Nepalese way of life, the peculiarly Nepalese contribution to the world culture.
